Collage
These collage pieces are designed using a quilt pattern called "The Drunkard's Path." In quilts made with this pattern, the arrangement of light and dark panels can create a wide variety of designs. Historically, quilts made with this pattern were prominent in the 1930s as part of the Temperance movement. As women were not yet permitted to vote, the display of quilts such as these provided a means to voice their opinions.
I selected this pattern not because of its historical significance but because of the emphasis on the idea of a path or a line of movement, which connects to my training as a dancer and my previous linear abstraction paintings. The name itself specifically reminds me of my childhood vaudevillian dance instructor, Lloyd Tygett; he played a drunken character in one of his ballets. The eight quilt-design collages in this exhibition have an additional layer of inspiration - texts. Seven of these pieces were created with a specific quote used as a guide and inspiration. A shortened version of the quote serves as the title of each piece, and the author's name is also noted in the title. |
