This piece was created in response to two separate quilts in the collection of the Warren County History Museum. Monmouth College art faculty and students were invited to participate in an exhibition for which new artworks, inspired by objects in the collection, were created and displayed alongside the historical artifacts. The quilt types that inspired this piece were a Crazy Quilt and a Signature Quilt. The painted text is a quote from Alain de Botton.
“A dominant impulse on encountering beauty is to want to hold on to it, to possess it and give it weight in one’s life. There is an urge to say, ‘I was here, I saw this, and it mattered to me.’ There is only one way to possess beauty properly and that is by understanding it by making oneself conscious of the factors responsible for it.”
